Deon Jackson

Deon Jackson, kids Muay Thai instructor at Baltimore Martial Arts Academy, in the cage at Shogun Fights

Coach Deon Jackson runs the Kids Muay Thai program at Baltimore Martial Arts Academy in Catonsville. He is an active MMA competitor — his most recent bout, at Shogun Fights in September 2026, ended in a submission win — and a decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor who holds a purple belt.

That matters for the children he teaches in a simple way: the techniques are taught by someone who uses them under pressure, and who knows exactly what safe practice looks like because his own training depends on it.

How he teaches

Pads and bags first, with full protective gear. Technique is taught one piece at a time — stance, footwork, a punch, a kick — in the air, then on pads, then with a partner. Sparring is optional, fully geared and supervised, and only for children who are ready for it. Deon is patient with children, and kids listen to him; the video on the Kids Muay Thai page shows why.

He also takes our kids to tournaments. For a child who wants to test themselves, competing with their coach in their corner is one of the best confidence-builders there is. It is always optional.

What he teaches

Kids Muay Thai, ages 7 and up — punches, kicks, knees and elbows, defence, conditioning, and the respect and self-control that come with a traditional striking art. Current days and times are on the class schedule. Adults who want to train the same art can start with adult Muay Thai.

As a competitor

Deon competes in mixed martial arts and in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where he has a long record of tournament results and holds a purple belt. His September 2026 Shogun Fights bout ended with a submission — the grappling he teaches our kids, applied where it counts.
