What classes do you guys offer that will help me lose weight?

Many prospective members come to Baltimore Martial Arts & Fitness asking us what classes or programs that we offer will help them lose weight. Often they tell us that they need something to motivate them because the gym has become boring or that they work out harder when someone is there to push them. A personal trainer can often help, assuming you can find a good one, which is extremely difficult. Personal training can also be costly (e.g. $50/hour).

If you want to lose weight and keep the weight off and if your story is similar to one described above, consider group fitness classes. Baltimore Martial Arts offers several group fitness classes of which you can take one or more for an affordable price. If you combine our fitness programs with a sensible diet (e.g. Whole 30) and you come to class regularly, we promise that you will achieve your health goals. For a long time now, I have been wanting to thank you for your generosity in giving us such a discount on the kettlebell classes. We would not have been able to afford them had you not done that for us and I have to tell you they were pretty life changing for me. I am sooo grateful to you! I have always been a pretty active person and truly do enjoy exercising, but also always thought that I was just “built bigger”. I had honestly convinced myself that no matter how much I worked out, I’d just have a thick, stocky, athletic body and was pretty miserable and uncomfortable in my own skin. Well you and your example totally changed my way of thinking!! Hopefully this doesn’t sound too weird haha, but seeing how lean, healthy, and yet still feminine your body is – I realized I could probably get there too if I actually tried. Your positive motivation and confidence in my ability to push myself made me want to do just that – push myself and see how far I could get. Thanks to your motivation and encouragement to be healthy and strong, both directly and through your example, I have lost 50 pounds since having Louie in February. Sadly only 20 of that was weight I had gained during pregnancy, but I’m never going back to those numbers again. I still have a bit more body fat to lose, but I’m almost there. I’ve lost 4 lbs so far with Kettlebells

Cardio Aerobics is Counter Productive to your Health

Most people think that running on treadmill or doing “Cardio” aerobics is good for losing weight and for improving health. This may be true to a degree, but new scientific evidence suggests that this approach is becoming outdated and that “Cardio” exercise could actually be detrimental to your metabolism and that there are better ways to lose weight and improve your health.

Six Reasons Why Aerobic Work is Counterproductive by Keith Alpert, Strength Coach from Boston

  1. Continuous aerobic work plateaus after 8 weeks of training so anything more is counterproductive.
  2. Aerobic training worsens power locally and systemically – in other words, it can make you slower.
  3. Aerobic training increases oxidative stress which can accelerate aging.
  4. Aerobic training increases adrenal stress which can make you fatter and produce other undesirable health consequences
  5. Aerobic training increases body fat in stressed individuals by contributing additional stress.
  6. Aerobic training worsens testosterone/cortisol ratio which impedes your ability to add fat burning lean muscle.

Fifty Year Old Mother of Three

I had lost the weight thru a good diet and had gotten into triathalons from friends thru this studio but was not in core shape and was plagued with overuse injuries. Danyelle was just starting teaching kettlebell and core classes when she noticed my imbalances especially with my hip flexors which were intefering for my first marathon training. After 6 months of consistant kettlebell training I was able to run that marathon but more important my injuries are no gone and I have done a 2nd marathon. I am now training for my first Ironman this summer and when my coach tried to get me to give up kettlebells(for time in training) I refused the core strength I have gained will not only help me with injury prevention but keeps me young. Danyelle is always studying and improving training and I love the classes because it improves me and my training. PS I am not far off from turning 50 and am in the best shape of my life.
