Capoeira is the Afro-Brazilian martial art that takes its roots during the colonial era of Brazil. Capoeira combines music, dance, acrobatics, play and martial elements into a dynamic ritual fight. The details of capoeira’s origins and early history are still a matter of debate among historians, but it is clear that African slaves played a crucial role in the development of the art form. Capoeira differs from other Martial Arts because of the strong African and Brazilian components: the rhythm of the music, the call and response of the songs, and the Ginga, the mobile guard of Capoeira that resembles dance steps. Capoeira is a delightful sight, fun, relaxing, and empowering.

Check out this cool video of what Capoeira looks like:

Capoeira is an energetic, the game or dance, played in a circle with musical accompaniment, in which two players try to take each other down, or otherwise dominate each other, whilst showing a mastery of movement. The players evade touching any part of the body to the ground excluding the hands, feet, and head. Becoming skilled demands long-term training. Full involvement requires learning how to play instruments, as well as learning the necessary movement skills.

Children's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament at Baltimore Martial Arts

The Baltimore Martial Arts Academy hosts a children’s Brazilian Jujitsu (BJJ) tournament at its facility every 4 months. The primary purpose is to help instill within children a competitive spirit, self confidence and life’s lessons concerning winning and losing. Every child comes away feeling good about themselves as each receives a medal and patches regardless of how well they placed. Kids that earn first place receive a nice trophy.

There were over 40 competitors spanning 8 divisions including children aged 5 through 13. For several children this was their first tournament. For others, especially for our children”s competition traveling team it was one of many. One little girl in particular, named Lilly, won her first BJJ trophy after 2 years of trying. Needless to say that she was very happy as well as her parents.

Baltimore Martial Arts is planning a BJJ Junior Promotional sometime in mid April. We will have two students, Nick Taylor & Sonny Csorba testing for their junior black belt. Both of these students have been actively competing on the BJJ tournament circuit and are excellent role models for the rest of their classmates.

Referring the tournament for the first time was Steven Lord. He is a BJJ purple belt under professor Sauer and in one of our Brazilian Jujitsu instructors for our Adult students. Justin Pyle Sr., Justin Pyle Jr. & Ronnie Russell also refereed. Our next tournament will take place sometime in mid  June.

Girl Scouts or Brazilian Jujitsu – Baltimore Martial Arts

I can’t say enough good things about the school. My daughter is enrolled in the Brazilian Jujitsu classes at the Baltimore Martial Arts Academy in Catonsville. At one point we had to give her the choice between Jujitsu or Girl scouts. She chose Jujitsu. She loves the fact, that after every class she is rewarded with a stripe on her belt. She is so excited to test for her next belt. As a parent I love the fact that the instructors know who she is, something I didn’t find in Girl Scouts.

BJJ Teaches Children Discipline, Self Confidence & Respect

My Name is Anita Mallikarjuna. I enrolled my son Samarth at Baltimore Martial Arts in Catonville about 5 months ago. I am very pleased with my son’s progress and I am very happy with the results. The program has given my son self confidence and has helped make him strong & sturdy. The Baltimore Martial Arts Academy’s youth BJJ program also teaches the importance of discipline in life and the importance of respecting elders including Parents and Teachers. The teachers are really good. My son loves going to class. I am looking forward to seeing my son continue with the program. Mr. Gary is a really nice person and together with his staff tries their best for each child.

More than just Martial Arts

Life is what you make of it. At the Baltimore Martial Arts in Catonville just across the street form Toys R Us. There is life for all ages. My six years old son is taking a karate class at the Baltimore Martial Arts. Due to the fact that he has lots of energy that needs to be burned off and a short attention span so far this class has helped him focus and be less restless. With the help of his instructors Mr. Gary, Mrs. Kate and Mrs. Hanna my son has also learned that in life you lose some and you win some as long as he tries his best, don’t give up and with practice he will do better. Also, due to these factors and the extra little things that they notice my son does better in school. I also, have my thirteen year old cousin who is taking karate. She was not that social and was a type of person who did nothing but sit around most of the time which lead her to an unhealthy size and nearly caused her to become a diabetic. By joining karate she has gained more confidence; she socializes more with other children and for a person of her healthy size she can really move now. This place has a great owner Mr. Gary a very nice person who believes in you and the children. Mr. Gary and his staff tries to set things up to accommodate every child, adult and parent for a better health and a better you.

Thank You,
T. Brown
