New Movie Pairs Ronda Rousey with Pencak Silat Action Star, Iko Uwais

pencak silat baltimore

Shortly after Ronda Rousey’s spectacular victory over Cat Zingano, Peter Berg announced that he will be producing a film, called “Mile 22,” featuring Rousey and International Silat Superstar, Iko Uwais. In a March 2nd article, “Variety” quoted Berg as saying, “I am a huge fan of what Gareth (Evans) and Iko did on both ‘Raid’ films, and I’m very excited at the possibility of working with Ronda and Iko to create a film in the spirit of this new wave of combat cinema emerging from Indonesia.” The movie will feature Rousey as a CIA agent, who teams up with an Indonesian police officer to fight extreme government corruption.

pencak silat martial arts

The Indonesian fighting style of Pencak Silat lends itself well to the big screen. As a traditional martial art, it is known for exotic and graceful movements, but its vicious and diverse range of techniques, including a heavy emphasis on knife fighting, give it a strong combative element. Silat’s brutal elbow and knee attacks are reminiscent of other Southeast Asian styles, such as Muay Thai. It also includes a strong emphasis on takedowns and destructive joint locks. Perhaps Silat’s most unique and distinctive feature is its penchant for kicks and sweeps launched from a low crouching or kneeling position. These types of skills were on full display in the famous elevator scene in Uwais’ 2009 feature film, “Merantau.”

Already popular in many parts of Europe, Silat is still relatively rare in the U.S., but “Baltimore Martial Arts Academy” is fortunate to have a program, teaching the art of Pencak Silat Mande Muda. Please come join us to learn more about this exciting and fast-growing art.

Baltimore Martial Art’s instructors, coaches, friends, classmates & family were in attendance at Maryland Cage Combat Friday March 16th, 2013. Coach Walter, Charles Gamble, Herb Severn, Benjamin Kassim & Gary Berger were there. Mr. Pagano, Corbin’s dad, was more nervous than Corbin before the fight. Mr. Pagano was an accomplished wrestler back in the day. Ironically Corbin’s mother wasn’t nervous at all saying her son and his brother have been fighting ever since birth. Coach Charles helped corner a competitor from another school who was apparently a police officer and was there by himself.

Professor Pedro Sauer

Master Pedro Sauer

Certified 8th Degree Red/Black Belt Instructor under Rickson Gracie.

Personal History

Professor Pedro Sauer was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where from an early age, he began training in the martial arts. At age five, he began boxing and later took up judo and taekwondo. At age fifteen, however, his friend, Rickson Gracie, invited him to train jiu-jitsu with his younger brother, Royler, who at the time was only nine years old. The outcome of this experience convinced him that jiu-jitsu was the most effective of all the martial arts, and he began training the very next day.

Pedro worked towards a double major (Economics and Business Administration) in college, and took post graduation course at Fundacao Getulio Vargas. He worked in Brazil as a stockbroker for eleven years before deciding to move to the United States and pursue a career teaching jiu-jitsu. In 1990, he moved to California with the original wave of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructors. He lived in California with Rickson Gracie and trained daily with the Gracie brothers (Rickson, Rorion, and Royce), their father, Helio Gracie, their cousin, Renzo Gracie, and the Machado Brothers, as well as many others. In December of that same year, he moved to Utah where he has lived for the past eight years, pioneering brazilian jiu-jitsu in the American southwest.

Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Promotion at Baltimore Martial Arts

Several junior students from the Baltimore Martial Arts Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program recently tested for their next belt. Four students in particular tested and passed their junior BJJ black belt.

The junior black belt candidates had to pass a grueling one hour test of physical strength, endurance and mental challenges before they were tested for technique proficiency. Their entire test took about 2 1/2 hours and was a testament to what students can achieve through hard work and dedication.

NAGA Maryland BJJ Tournament

Baltimore Martial Arts students competed at the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) in Landover, MD. on Saturday October 8th, 2011.

George, 17 years old wins BJJ Adult Novice Division. NAGA Landover, Maryland October 2011

Baltimore Martial Arts junior copetitors Justin Pyle and Ben Metzler competed in the junior advanced division. Both young men had very tough matches against nationally ranked competitors. Justin, the one man army, succumbed to some submissions but put on a good effort. This was Ben Metzler’s first NAGA tournament. He had one win and three losses. Oscar Heredia competed in novice and had some very tough matches. Two losses came at the last second and one loss was decided by an advantage. Oscar took off for the summer but he is back in training and going hard.

Oscar hold a first place trophy samurai sword at NAGA Landover Maryland October 2011.

Ian Rathmell was alos away for the summer but decided to compete. He was very brave in all of his matches and showed determination throughout. Wins didn’t happen for Ian or Oscar but showing up made them winners in my eyes.

Baltimore Martial Arts junior competition team will be in training for more upcoming tournaments. Our team has not been doing as many NAGA tournaments as we have in the past. Lately we have been participating in the Junior Grappling tournaments which offer a double elimination format thus allowing our kids to compete in more matches. Justin Pyle Jr has had as many as 17 matches (maybe more) in one day. The next Junior Grappling tournament will be held in Virginia Saturday October 15th. The Junior Grappling 2 day National Championships will be held in Fredericksburgh, Virginia November 12-13. This event will award competitors that have accumulated points throughout the 2011 BJJ competitive year.

NAGA Landover MD 2011

NAGA in Landover MD October 2011

Turnout for NAGA Landover appeared to be half of what it was last year. This photo was taken at about 10:30 AM while the rules discussion was taking place. This discussion took about an hour which for many who are familiar with the rules can be lengthly. Im not sure why the turnout was less. Some people commented that it was due to the economy. Maybe you have an opinion???

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Teenager named Battalion Honor Cadet

teenager brazilian jujitsu

Ben - Navy Sea Cadet and BJJ Student

A mother’s letter concerning her son’s accomplishments at Navy Sea Cadet School and how his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training at Baltimore Martial Arts has helped him.

A quick note regarding Ben’s first training (Seaman Recruit Training) which he just completed on Saturday. Ben was named Battalion Honor Cadet (highest achievement for all of the companies of recruits), was awarded the Academic Excellence Award for scoring the highest on the written exam and tied for first in their final run of 9.2 miles in a time of 75 minutes. He also excelled in his other Physical Readiness Testing. While we certainly know that much of what he brought to the table came from the training received at his Division, we also recognize how the physical and mental/emotional training he’s receiving at the Baltimore Martial Arts Academy played a huge part in his success. Many thanks to you and your staff for your excellent work with the students.

Best regards,
Bonnie Pilkington

Justin Pyle – A One Kid Army at Junior Grappling Summer Classic

Justin Pyle, Jr. competed at the Junior Grappling Summer Classic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament in Fredricksburg, Virginia Saturday July 30th, 2011.

junior grappling brazilian jiu-jitsu

Justin Pyle Jr. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's One Kid Army

Justin represented the Baltimore Martial Arts Junior Grappling Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition team. Single handily he won a first place team trophy and the “Iron Grapplers” cup which is awarded to the grappler who had the most matches during the event. Justin had 22 matches which was a new Junior Grappling record. Summertime has been tough on our junior BJJ competition team with so many kids on vacation and in summer camp, however our team is rallying for the next Junior Grappling tournament in Millersville, Maryland on August 20th, 2011.

Justin is an exemplary young man who not only has courage and the indomitable spirit, but also has compassion and a maturity which many teens now-a-days are lacking. Justin attends BJJ and Judo classes often four and sometimes five days a week. He assists Sensei Gary Berger with some of his BJJ classes for the younger children for which he is an admired role model.

Justin’s dad is a behind the scenes hero. We call him our dojo dad because he is always at the school either bringing Justin to class, training in Aikido or helping out in some capacity. Justin’s dad also tirelessly drives Justin to all of his numerous jujitsu tournaments which sometimes are hundreds of miles a way.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the martial arts in general has repeatedly been shown to help kids who may have difficulty adjusting to life in school or at home. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu helps children develop self confidence, build integrity and also gives them an ability to make better decisions. If you have a child or teenager that you think would benefit from our jujitsu programs please call.

Danyelle Berger, CSCS, RKCII

Danyelle Berger received her Russian Kettlebell Challenge (RKC) level two certification on Sunday July 10th 2011. The RKC Challenge is a brutal three day test of strength, endurance, kettlebell skills and the ability to teach those skills to others. RKC standards are very high often yielding high failure rates among among RKC applicants.

The picture below is what Danyelle’s hands looked like after day one.

Blistered hands during RKC training and certification RKCII
A price to pay being an RKC instructor.

Typical occurrence at RKC certification events. RKC students often have to tape their hands as a result. This is part of RKC training and something that makes RKC so grueling and certification so hard to achieve.

Danyelle Berger has been training and preparing for her level 2 kettlebell certification for about a year. Her hard work and perseverance paid off as she is heading home as a level 2 RKC instructor and able to share her knowledge and new experiences with her students at Baltimore Martial Arts and Fitness.

Female RKCII Candidates in Minneapolis, July 2011

This particular group of women were “Historical” being the STRONGEST group of ladies that the RKC has ever seen. Amazing feats of strength were accomplished with one woman, Krystal Robens, strict pressing a 32kg kettlebell over her head. Other notable female accomplishments include – Nikki Shlosser 40kg Bent Press Shannon O’Neil 32kg Bent Press & Molly Bird 24kg Bent Press (could easily have done 28). Adrianne Harvey attempted “Iron Maiden” which requires doing a pistol squat, a military press and a pull up with a 24kg kettlebell. Her pistol squat was solid, her press was solid and came within 3 inches of doing her pull up. So close!!!

She and her gravels had to spend the entire three day event performing and demonstrating kettlebell skills. Each day of training can last more than 8 hours and is mostly outdoors in 90 degree weather. She and her class trained for twenty two hours total. Joe Sansalone, center row third from the left, was Danyelle’s original strength and conditioning coach and trainer of kettlebells.

He has trained and prepared many children throughout the years in order to help them face adversities in life like big bullies and other challenges that ask for perseverance and confidence which the martial arts is well know for providing.

Determination - Kids Martial Arts Catonsville

catonsville martial arts
Justin Pyle – Kids BJJ

Martial arts has gone through a lot of changes over the years especially since Mixed Martial Arts has become so popular. With the introduction of MMA and an emphasis placed on styles like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai, many schools have strayed away from their grass root traditions in order to compete with other schools that offer and advertise children’s programs that revolve around these popular styles. Mr. Berger has been studying martial arts his whole life. His mother introduced him to Karate when he was four. Sensei Berger has studies many disciplines including Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Arnis, Kickboxing, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. Sensei Berger’s school teaches a variety of martial arts styles to children including Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, however there is an emphasis on maintaing the traditions and the discipline which is part of the martial arts heritage. Many modern instructors today that have not had an upbringing or exposure to the traditional styles have a hard time understanding this.

Our instructor’s incorporate lessons of morality, examples of character and teach our kids in such a way that they learn to understand what it means to have discipline. Self confidence is so important to a young person’s development. Our children’s BJJ program has a student creed which every student must recite before every class. Each student is expected to memorize and understand this student creed in order to receive their next belt. Our student creed is as follows:

  1. I will develop my mind and my body.
  2. I will increase my self control.
  3. I will use my Jiu-Jitsu skills for good and never use them against my family, friends, pets or furniture.
  4. I will always try my best.
  5. I can do better than I think I can.

Mr. Berger will sometimes take 5-10 minutes discussing an aspect of the student creed and how his students can apply it to their lives. Interesting to note in the part about not using your Jiu-jitsu skills against “Furniture”. Furniture was a late addition to the creed after a parent came to me the day after our students were karate kicking some board for focus and confidence training. Apparently one little boy went into his parents basement and decided to karate kick and break all of the kitchen cabinetry that was scheduled to be installed later in the week. Needless to say these parents were not happy so Mr. Berger decided to make sure that this never happened again.

Lessons contained within the children’s student creed are limitless. There are countless lessons in each creed that apply to children and adults that will serve them for the rest of their lives. Mr. Berger’s hope is that no matter how long he may have the opportunity to teach a student martial arts and no matter what techniques they might remember or forget, he hopes that they remember the principles of the student creed.

Getting Fit for FREE

Baltimore Martial Arts was recently mentioned in the Baltimore Sun. Below is a brief excerpt. For the complete article click HERE.

freefitness

Yoga at the Harbor

Free Gym Memberships and Classes

There are at least two paths to travel if you want to work out for free at local gyms and exercise studios. The first is to obtain a pass for a trial run. The second is to work at the business, even part time, since most health clubs give free membership to employees.

Gyms and fitness studios often offer passes entitling users to a week or two of free classes and use of equipment, as a way to lure potential members. Gold’s Gym offers a seven-day pass on its website. Merritt Athletic Club advertises a five-day pass.

“We usually have passes to try the club for 14 days at no risk,” said Josh Gerber, marketing director for Lynne Brick’s and Brick Bodies, the Maryland chain of coed and female-only health clubs. Pass-holders can use all gym equipment and take classes at any location during the two weeks, he said. Instructors and other employees, even part-time ones, get free memberships, he said.

Other local businesses have similar deals, so if there’s a particular venue that interests you, it pays to ask if you can try it for free.

“We always offer a free tryout class,” said Danyelle Berger, who owns the Baltimore Martial Arts Academy with her husband, Gary. And here’s an inside tip: If you ask, you’ll almost certainly get a free week, she said. “It’s almost too much stuff to try to come in and try one class,” she said. Options include judo, Pilates, kettlebell fitness, karate and kickboxing aerobics.

The Bergers, who opened the studio in 1995 and moved it from Howard County to Baltimore County last year, also give memberships to employees, including students who take on such tasks as cleaning, she said. “We just want to make it work.”

Parent Testimonial – Kids Judo at Baltimore Martial Arts

I wanted to share with you what an amazing experience this has been for John and I. Tomas is a wonderful instructor and your staff is a great group of people. John came to Tomas as an intense, small boy who worked extremely hard and accomplished a lot but could not stand losing a match, even a practice one.

He often broke down in frustration when he lost a match. Tomas was sensitive to John’s needs and quickly picked up on John’s intensity and worked with him to John’s advantage. As a result, John is now a confident 11 year old who no longer NEEDS to win every time. Judo has done him well and I am grateful to you and Tomas.

Bullying Prevention

No matter how hard we try to protect our children, kids will still have to learn to deal with bullies on their own.

Brajilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor, Stephen Whittier discusses bullying on Fox 45 News.

Bullying has become a serious problem in America. Childhood bullying can harm a child’s self esteem and leave psychological scars for life. The bullying tactics used by todays younger generations have changed considerably since most of use were children. Bullying today can lead to law suits, serious injury or even death. All too often we hear of children or teenagers who have resorted to suicide due to bullying, teasing or physical harassment. Sadly, even the most well intentioned parents are often oblivious to the signs of distress until it is too late.

Baltimore Martial Arts operates professional and time tested youth martial arts programs that teach children how to deal with bullying. Our programs emphasize developing confidence and self esteem as well as giving kids the skills necessary to deal with verbal and physical abuse on their own.

These days it seems everyone is trying to come up with the best way to deal with bullying. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is quickly becoming the martial art of choice when it comes to teaching children skills that are most effective in self-defense encounters. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gives kids the ability to stop bullying without  resorting to fighting or violence. If a child who learn Brazilian Jujitsu has to defend themselves against a physical attack, they have on hand a variety of options which include passively restraints and submissions.

My name is Gary Berger and I have taught hundreds of children in the twelve years my school, The Baltimore Martial Arts Academy, l has been operating.  Come check it out for yourself!
