UFC 128: Shogun vs. Evans Officially Announced

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will defend the UFC light heavyweight belt he won last May for the first time March 19 in Newark, N.J., against former champion Rashad Evans. The bout between Shogun and Evans will headline UFC 128, the organization confirmed Tuesday.“With the main event and the other fights we’re putting together, we’re bringing an awesome card to New Jersey, and I’m excited to get back to the East Coast,” UFC President Dana White said in a release. In addition to the light heavyweight championship fight, UFC 128 will also feature the anticipated UFC debut of Urijah Faber. Faber will face off against Eddie Wineland in one of the UFC’s first marquee bantamweight bouts since it acquired the WEC.

Other announced fights include two lightweight bouts — Kurt Pellegrino vs. Gleison Tibau and Edson Barboza vs. Anthony Njokuani — and a bantamweight fight between Joseph Benavidenz and Ian Loveland. A heavyweight fight between Mirko “Cro Crop” Filipovic and Brendan Schaub is also in the works for UFC 128 and expected to be added to the main card shortly.

Shogun vs. Evans is a long-awaited fight pitting two of the past three titleholders in the 205-weight division. Evans had the belt in 2009 before losing it to Lyoto Machida, who Shogun eventually defeated. “Shogun has been on an absolute tear and proved that by knocking out Lyoto Machida to take the belt,” White said. “Now he faces Rashad Evans, who is coming off back-to-back wins over Thiago Silva and Rampage Jackson and has never been hungrier to reclaim the title.”
