Justin Pyle – Kids BJJ

Martial arts has gone through a lot of changes over the years especially since Mixed Martial Arts has become so popular. With the introduction of MMA and an emphasis placed on styles like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai, many schools have strayed away from their grass root traditions in order to compete with other schools that offer and advertise children’s programs that revolve around these popular styles. Mr. Berger has been studying martial arts his whole life. His mother introduced him to Karate when he was four. Sensei Berger has studies many disciplines including Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Arnis, Kickboxing, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. Sensei Berger’s school teaches a variety of martial arts styles to children including Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, however there is an emphasis on maintaing the traditions and the discipline which is part of the martial arts heritage. Many modern instructors today that have not had an upbringing or exposure to the traditional styles have a hard time understanding this.

Our instructor’s incorporate lessons of morality, examples of character and teach our kids in such a way that they learn to understand what it means to have discipline. Self confidence is so important to a young person’s development. Our children’s BJJ program has a student creed which every student must recite before every class. Each student is expected to memorize and understand this student creed in order to receive their next belt. Our student creed is as follows:

  1. I will develop my mind and my body.
  2. I will increase my self control.
  3. I will use my Jiu-Jitsu skills for good and never use them against my family, friends, pets or furniture.
  4. I will always try my best.
  5. I can do better than I think I can.

Mr. Berger will sometimes take 5-10 minutes discussing an aspect of the student creed and how his students can apply it to their lives. Interesting to note in the part about not using your Jiu-jitsu skills against “Furniture”. Furniture was a late addition to the creed after a parent came to me the day after our students were karate kicking some board for focus and confidence training. Apparently one little boy went into his parents basement and decided to karate kick and break all of the kitchen cabinetry that was scheduled to be installed later in the week. Needless to say these parents were not happy so Mr. Berger decided to make sure that this never happened again.

Lessons contained within the children’s student creed are limitless. There are countless lessons in each creed that apply to children and adults that will serve them for the rest of their lives. Mr. Berger’s hope is that no matter how long he may have the opportunity to teach a student martial arts and no matter what techniques they might remember or forget, he hopes that they remember the principles of the student creed.
