New anti-bullying trend: Teaching victims to fight back

This article by Kristin Kalning was published on MSNBC.com last week concerning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and how BJJ helps children fight off big bullies. Society has typically dealt with bullying via establishing zero tolerance policies or applying other behavior consequences toward bullying offenders. A new approach that is gaining momentum is to target the victims, not the bullies, by teaching victims how to stand up and fight back against the bully.

Kalning writes, If you found out that bullies were hassling your kid, what would you do? Help him rehearse comeback lines? Or show him how to open a can of whoop-ass, and knock those jerks into next week?

Bullying Prevention

No matter how hard we try to protect our children, kids will still have to learn to deal with bullies on their own.

Brajilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor, Stephen Whittier discusses bullying on Fox 45 News.

Bullying has become a serious problem in America. Childhood bullying can harm a child’s self esteem and leave psychological scars for life. The bullying tactics used by todays younger generations have changed considerably since most of use were children. Bullying today can lead to law suits, serious injury or even death. All too often we hear of children or teenagers who have resorted to suicide due to bullying, teasing or physical harassment. Sadly, even the most well intentioned parents are often oblivious to the signs of distress until it is too late.

Baltimore Martial Arts operates professional and time tested youth martial arts programs that teach children how to deal with bullying. Our programs emphasize developing confidence and self esteem as well as giving kids the skills necessary to deal with verbal and physical abuse on their own.

These days it seems everyone is trying to come up with the best way to deal with bullying. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is quickly becoming the martial art of choice when it comes to teaching children skills that are most effective in self-defense encounters. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gives kids the ability to stop bullying without  resorting to fighting or violence. If a child who learn Brazilian Jujitsu has to defend themselves against a physical attack, they have on hand a variety of options which include passively restraints and submissions.

My name is Gary Berger and I have taught hundreds of children in the twelve years my school, The Baltimore Martial Arts Academy, l has been operating.  Come check it out for yourself!
