Master Tavares taught various techniques applicable to the ‘De La Riva’ guard. Emphasis was placed on the ‘Bebibolo’ sweep that has become prevalent in higher level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournamants.

Fitness Benefits Cancer Patients
Fitness Benifits Cancer Patients
by Melanie Brown
Most people are aware of the link between physical fitness and overall health. However, some cancer patients neglect this aspect of their recovery or feel that they simply do not have the energy or motivation to get in shape during such an arduous process. The good news is that fitness can help you in almost every aspect of your life, including battling cancer. It can give you extra energy for daily activities, it can lift your spirits through its mood-boosting effects, and it can help you sleep better and more soundly at night.
It may seem illogical that exercising will give you more energy but actually, the energy you expend during exercise will give you more long-lasting energy and endurance over a longer period of time. This is true even for those suffering from cancers like those of the lungs, breast, and mesothelioma.
You may be picturing yourself doing grueling sessions of lifting weights or long runs, but this is not necessary to reap the benefits of exercise. Almost any exercise you can do on a regular basis will have some positive benefits. You should start out slowly, only gradually building up the pace and intensity of your exercise. The main thing is to always listen to what your body is telling you. If you are pushing yourself too hard, it will let you know. Then you will know to ease back a bit during your next session because overexertion can hurt you in the long run during treatments.
Another key point is to make sure your oncology team is aware of your desire to improve your fitness. They can offer advice on what type and intensity of exercise is appropriate for someone in your stage of treatment. If you do things right, your increased fitness level will give you more energy, endurance, and lift your mood. Stick with it for the best results!
Running
One great form of exercise that has helped some cancer patients is running or jogging. Running will boost endorphin release, which helps elevate your mood and dampen feelings of pain. You will also build your muscle strength and endurance.
Make sure that you are wearing appropriate footwear. You will also want to run on surfaces like grass instead of pavement. This helps prevent damage to your knees, ankles, and feet. Joint pain is a common side effect for cancer patients so it is important to be mindful of where you are running and the toll it could take.
Remember to run only a short distance your first time to see how your body responds. You might even take a few days off before your second attempt. This will allow your body time to recover from suddenly having these muscles stressed. Just as with any other exercise you may try, start slow and build your way up.
Swimming
Unless you have a heated pool available, this one may be seasonal for you. But swimming is another great way to get fit. One of the great things about swimming is that it is very forgiving on your joints. The buoyancy of the water will support your weight and reduce stress on those areas. Be sure to try out different strokes so that you are getting balanced development in your various muscle groups. The variety will also help keep you motivated.
No matter what activities you partake in, as long as you are consistently active you will begin to see the benefits in no time. Research shows that regular physical activity can not only help combat cancer and improve your well being while do so, but it can also help reduce the odds of developing cancer for those who have not been diagnosed. As for those who have already beaten cancer, it is equally as important to stay active because it can reduce the odds of recurrence as well.

Baltimore Martial Art’s instructors, coaches, friends, classmates & family were in attendance at Maryland Cage Combat Friday March 16th, 2013. Coach Walter, Charles Gamble, Herb Severn, Benjamin Kassim & Gary Berger were there. Mr. Pagano, Corbin’s dad, was more nervous than Corbin before the fight. Mr. Pagano was an accomplished wrestler back in the day. Ironically Corbin’s mother wasn’t nervous at all saying her son and his brother have been fighting ever since birth. Coach Charles helped corner a competitor from another school who was apparently a police officer and was there by himself.

Karate Kid Makes his Mom Breakfast
I was cleaning up my office today and came across this letter written to me from a parent of one of my junior Brazilian Jiu Jitsu students. I teach all of my students to be more responsible at home and to help out their parents whenever possible. Practicing discipline at home and at school is just as important as practicing at my dojo (a Japanese name for martial arts school.)

Martial Arts helps to motivate children to get better grades and help out more at home.
Practicing qualities like discipline, patience & self control is an important part of life. Both children and parents are challenged every day to exercise these traits. I teach my children to recognize opportunities in order to practice their skills. For example, when faced with a desert before dinner, children are to have self control and not touch or taste it until they have finished with their dinner. If they can do this or if they are presented with another similar temptation, they are to share this experience with their parents and with their karate classmates at my school. One child’s story benefits us all, even the parents in the dojo watching and listening in their chairs.
Over the holidays, I proposed a special challenge to my students called the “Goodie Test”. I asked them to clear a table and place onto it one of their favorite treats. They were to sit at that table and stare at that treat for five minutes while resisting the urge to touch, taste or eat that treat. As long as a parent could vouch for their child successfully passing this challenge, that student was rewarded with a toy of their choice from among a large container of random toys that I keep on hand for special occasions.

Kettlebell Testimonial – Changing your Life!
What classes do you guys offer that will help me lose weight?
Many prospective members come to Baltimore Martial Arts & Fitness asking us what classes or programs that we offer will help them lose weight. Often they tell us that they need something to motivate them because the gym has become boring or that they work out harder when someone is there to push them. A personal trainer can often help, assuming you can find a good one, which is extremely difficult. Personal training can also be costly (e.g. $50/hour).
If you want to lose weight and keep the weight off and if your story is similar to one described above, consider group fitness classes. Baltimore Martial Arts offers several group fitness classes of which you can take one or more for an affordable price. If you combine our fitness programs with a sensible diet (e.g. Whole 30) and you come to class regularly, we promise that you will achieve your health goals. We don’t just help people get fit and look good, we help change people’s live. Read the testimonial below that one of our members recently sent to us.
For a long time now, I have been wanting to thank you for your generosity in giving us such a discount on the kettlebell classes. We would not have been able to afford them had you not done that for us and I have to tell you they were pretty life changing for me. I am sooo grateful to you! I have always been a pretty active person and truly do enjoy exercising, but also always thought that I was just “built bigger”. I had honestly convinced myself that no matter how much I worked out, I’d just have a thick, stocky, athletic body and was pretty miserable and uncomfortable in my own skin. Well you and your example totally changed my way of thinking!! Hopefully this doesn’t sound too weird haha, but seeing how lean, healthy, and yet still feminine your body is – I realized I could probably get there too if I actually tried. Your positive motivation and confidence in my ability to push myself made me want to do just that – push myself and see how far I could get. Thanks to your motivation and encouragement to be healthy and strong, both directly and through your example, I have lost 50 pounds since having Louie in February. Sadly only 20 of that was weight I had gained during pregnancy, but I’m never going back to those numbers again. I still have a bit more body fat to lose, but I’m almost there. So thank you, thank you so much! If there is ever anything I can do to help you, please let me know! Hope you are doing well!
Tara V.

Human Hands Evolved So That We Could Punch Each Other
Human hands evolved so we could punch each other
http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn23018-human-hands-evolved-so-we-could-punch-each-other.html?full=true&print=true
Journal reference: Journal of Experimental Biology, doi:10.1242/jeb.075713
23:00 19 December 2012 by Sara Reardon
Forget toolmaking, think fisticuffs. Did evolution shape our hands not
for dexterity but to form fists so we could punch other people? That
idea emerges from a new study, although it runs counter to
conventional wisdom.
About the same time as we stopped hanging from trees and started
walking upright, our hands become short and square, with opposable
thumbs. These anatomical changes are thought to have evolved for tool
manipulation, but David Carrier at the University of Utah in Salt Lake
City has an alternative explanation.
He says there are several possible hand shapes that would have allowed
greater dexterity, making it less clear why we ended up with the hands
we have. But only one hand shape lets us make a fist with a thumb as
buttress.
Among primates’ hands, ours is unique for its ability to form a fist
with the thumb outside the fingers. The fingers of other primates’
hands are too long to curl into their palms, and their thumbs are too
short to reach across the fingers. So when apes fight, they are far
more likely to wrestle or hold their opponent down while others stomp
on him, says Carrier.
To test the importance of fists, Carrier and his colleagues recruited
10 athletes and measured how hard they could hit a punching bag using
a normal fist, a fist with the thumb stuck out, and with an open palm.
The athletes could generate more than twice the force with a normal
fist as with the thumb-stuck-out fist, because of thumb’s buttressing
role. There was no difference in the force they could generate with a
normal fist and with an open palm, but Carrier says it’s possible that
a fist concentrates the force into a smaller area and so does more
damage.
Cause or effect?
Mary Marzke of Arizona State University in Tempe says the study is
interesting, but it far from proves that the ability to make a strong
fist was the main driver behind the evolution of our hands’ shape. It
is more likely that it was a useful side effect of a whole suite of
modifications.
She points out that apes strike with the heel of their hand when
knocking fruit out of trees. Carrier’s study didn’t assess the force
that the heel of the hand generates, but if it turns out to be as good
as a fist, it becomes less clear that our hands evolved so as to be
perfect for fist-making, Marzke says.
But if the hypothesis is true, Carrier thinks it could explain another
mystery. It has long been unclear why high levels of testosterone
cause men’s ring fingers to be longer than their index fingers. He
says the finger-length ratio makes sense if it generates a better
fist. This would make dominant males even better fighters.

Space is limited so please register early.

Professor Pedro Sauer
Master Pedro Sauer
Certified 8th Degree Red/Black Belt Instructor under Rickson Gracie.
Personal History
Professor Pedro Sauer was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where from an early age, he began training in the martial arts. At age five, he began boxing and later took up judo and taekwondo. At age fifteen, however, his friend, Rickson Gracie, invited him to train jiu-jitsu with his younger brother, Royler, who at the time was only nine years old. The outcome of this experience convinced him that jiu-jitsu was the most effective of all the martial arts, and he began training the very next day.
Pedro worked towards a double major (Economics and Business Administration) in college, and took post graduation course at Fundacao Getulio Vargas. He worked in Brazil as a stockbroker for eleven years before deciding to move to the United States and pursue a career teaching jiu-jitsu. In 1990, he moved to California with the original wave of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructors. He lived in California with Rickson Gracie and trained daily with the Gracie brothers (Rickson, Rorion, and Royce), their father, Helio Gracie, their cousin, Renzo Gracie, and the Machado Brothers, as well as many others. In December of that same year, he moved to Utah where he has lived for the past eight years, pioneering brazilian jiu-jitsu in the American southwest.

Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Promotion at Baltimore Martial Arts
Several junior students from the Baltimore Martial Arts Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program recently tested for their next belt. Four students in particular tested and passed their junior BJJ black belt.
The junior black belt candidates had to pass a grueling one hour test of physical strength, endurance and mental challenges before they were tested for technique proficiency. Their entire test took about 2 1/2 hours and was a testament to what students can achieve through hard work and dedication.

Tien Shan Pai Kung Fu
Kung Fu is a martial art with a very long history, and many different facets to it. While mostly known as an art of fighting, I believe it is much more than that – it is a system of surviving and thriving in difficult conditions, both individually and as a group. While there is a competitive side of Kung Fu, we see the main purpose to be a life long journey to acquire skills to support physical, mental and emotional well being. We emphasize overall development of a person versus achieving the highest possible results in competition of scores. People regardless of their age, physical condition, gender, weight benefit from our training program. Besides stand-up fighting, our Kung Fu training includes self-defence skills, physical fitness, defence against weapons, aspects of self-healing, relaxation and meditation.
Our school has a well developed curriculum to follow and measure individual progress. We see the belt system in a similar way to numerical system for classes in college: your belt indicating the skills you have as well as the set of skills you currently are working on. Reaching the black belt level is not an end of the path, rather it may be compared to achieving a bachelor’s degree in college when you have mastered the fundamental skills in a subject, and are ready go deeper in studying selected areas. Our chief instructor Mike Thomas and higher belt students in class are always happy to help you and answer questions. Below we tried to subdivide the Kung Fu program into distinct parts:
BASIC SELF-DEFENCE SKILLS

Kung Fu Black Belt Exam
As a part of our Kung Fu program, we teach basic elements of fighting skills: punches, kicks, blocks, stances, footwork, clinching, escapes from grabs. We use both heavy bags for stationary training and target mitts for training in motion. The basic techniques are used as building blocks for a variety of offence-defence combinations which train reflective responses to different attacks.
KUNG FU FORMS
Forms are prescribed sequences of moves based on martial art techniques. They train the correct way of moving, coordination of footwork with strikes and other techniques, as well as judgement of distance between opponents. When practiced with low and long stances repeatedly, forms also provide very intense and versatile physical workout. While forms are based on real fighting techniques, they are often performed in stylised fashion, becoming also a way of artistic expression.
FITNESS and CARDIO

Kung Fu Warm Ups & Stretching
Just participating in class activities provides a good deal of physical activity. In addition we conduct about 10 minutes of intensive cardio training every class using a variety of exercises, both based on Kung Fu tradition, and modern fitness approaches. It is also beneficial to stay after class for additional stretching and callisthenics as suitable to individual level and purposes.
CHIN-NA
Chin Na is a set of techniques applied to an opponent’s joints to defend against grabs and punches, restrict an opponent’s motion, and submit the opponent if necessary. It is a very efficient self-defence technique which often allows you to prevent attack before it becomes a full fledged striking exchange. Almost in every class we practice various aspects of chin na training, concentrating on technique and sensitivity to opponent’s intent and balance.
SPARRING

Kuoshu International Kung Fu Competition
Practice fights train the practical applications of skills in a situation close to real fight yet in a controlled environment. Besides improving fighting skills it has a number of psychological benefits. Sparring allows you to learn maintaining calm and self-confidence in threatening situations, control aggression, overcome fears, make decisions under pressure, understanding personal and opponent’s limitations. In our school we usually start introducing students to sparring after reaching green belt level.
WEAPONS

Shih Fu Rick Wheatley and Gary Berger
Tien Shan Pai includes a wide variety of weaponry. Most of the weapons taught are traditional implements used in ancient Chinese warfare. After a student attends the rank of Green Sash which can typically take about 6-12 months of training, he or she is introduced to the short staff. A short staff is a wooden dowel about 3 feet in length. After gaining proficiency in the short staff, the student is introduced to the broad sword. Other weapons that follow include the straight sword, long staff, spear, three sectional staff, fan and others.
TAI-CHI
Tai-Chi can be studied as a separate discipline and by itself can be considered a complete system of self-defense and personal development. It is true that it takes longer to develop the same level of self defence skills comparing to external styles. The variety and subtleness of techniques present an exciting challenge to someone interested to study human capabilities in depth. Tai-Chi principles have a lot in common with principles of traditional Chinese medicine, and Tai-Chi practice has proved to be beneficial for relaxation, the immune system, balance, and everyday energy level. In our classes, we teach all students 108 Long Yang form, with those interested having a possibility to continue studying 300 Yang Chen-Fu form, Tai-Chi straight sword form and their applications.
CROSS-TRAINING
The core heritage of our system is the Tien-Shen-Pai Kung Fu style. However throughout many years we have brought in many efficient techniques from other disciplines, both from other Kung Fu styles (Hang Gar, Wing Chun) and other martial arts (Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido, Kali). We strongly believe that a good martial artist has at least basic understanding of a number of different disciplines, while being excellent in a few. Different martial arts have different emphasis and techniques. Our class regularly trains together with the Aikido and Jiu-Jitsu classes in our school. Advanced students are also getting instruction in Kali and Arnis (Filipino knife and stick fighting).

Ben Metzler – Junior Black Belt
It was a grueling two hour test of physical exercise, martial technique and sparring, but Ben Metzler prevailed to become Baltimore Martial Arts newest addition to it’s junior black belt team. His fellow classmates participated in the test by taking turns wrestling Ben during three minutes of Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu wrestling. Ben’s dad, Bill Metzler worked out alongside Ben during a significant portion of the physical requirements. Ben's Classmates and Testing Partners
Conclusion:
Coincidently the day of Ben’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu test was his 15th birthday. Ben did an outstanding job. His father’s physical ability to hang and wrestle with his son was also very impressive. Ben and his father are both regular attendees of Baltimore Martial Arts. They have been taking BJJ, kettlebell and other classes with us for about three plus years. We will be sorry to see them leave this Summer as they are both going to India for a 2-3 year stay. They both plan to continue practicing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and hopefully return one day soon.

Stay Fit & Healthy With Taekwondo
Taekwondo is a top notch form of exercise for anyone. Regardless of your age, your gender, or where your initial fitness level is, you can try and benefit from Taekwondo training. Rather than focus on one area, Taekwondo will help you develop a deeper focus, confidence, and mental health and along with the mental benefits you will see benefits in your physical appearance as well like: building lean muscle, losing weight, increasing your flexibility, and improving your coordination.
For those that aren’t hardcore fitness freaks, it can be all too easy to get bored and burn out on a repetitive exercise routine like happens in lifting weight, treadmills, and elliptical machines, and eventually ending up falling back into an unhealthy lifestyle. Training in the Taekwondo style of martial arts is anything but one-dimensional, with a progressive variety of challenges that will keep you coming back to improve yourself. You can work on basic stances and strikes, try to perfect your execution in kata and forms, and improving your sparring skills.
Another benefit of Taekwondo is that everyone in the family can do it. Even small children can begin learning the basics of Taekwondo as early as three. Is this too early to worry about fitness training? Not at all! Taekwondo can help show children that exercise and health are fun, and make it more likely that they’ll grow up disciplined, focused, and with healthy habits.
Training with your spouse, partner, and/or children is also a great way to share support, celebrate each others’ successes, and strengthen the family bond. Training alongside your children is a huge boost in confidence for them, and in pride for you as you see them grow and improve. And they can help encourage you as well!
To see if Taekwondo feels right for you, consider visiting the Baltimore Martial Arts Academy and try a fee introductory class. Setting yourself, and perhaps your family, on the road to a healthy, happy life can be as simple as that!

The fight was back and forth with takedowns and takedown attempts from both fighters.
